Department of Music Receives $875K Grant
from the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation
The Department of Music has received a grant from the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation in the amount of $875,000 for the 2006 - 2008 academic years. The funds—for the Gluck Fellows Music Outreach and Performance Programs—will continue to provide world-class training to UCLA's student musicians, strengthen area public school music programs, and provide opportunities for at-risk youth to experience opera and music theater. The gift furthers a partnership between the department and the Gluck Foundation that began 12 years ago when the foundation donated funds for Opera UCLA's production of The Magic Flute. The following year, the department received a second gift, this one for opera and music theater productions for 1995-96. In 1997, the foundation donated $1 million to support the department's music outreach and performance programs. The gift was renewed in 2000 with an additional grant of $1.75 million. "The Gluck Foundation embraces projects that promote the arts and education and, particularly, those that involve multiple beneficiaries. Our relationship with UCLA has fostered these goals with mutual advantage," says Jon Kaswick, M.D., president of the foundation. "We are extremely grateful to the Maxwell H. Gluck Foundation for its generosity, which will enable us to maintain our strong tradition of performance, education and community outreach," states Ian Krouse, department chair. Funding from the Gluck Foundation allows the music department to send its finest musicians to schools, senior centers and other |
institutions throughout the Southern California community. The
program brings high quality musical performances and education free of charge to individuals and groups who might otherwise not have the opportunity to hear live classical and jazz music.
Approximately 50 UCLA students participate in the Gluck Music Performance Outreach Program each year, bringing close to 200 music performances to 25,000 members of the community. Through their outreach work, UCLA Gluck Music Fellows - who receive financial aid from the program - acquire vital performance experience and practical training in performance organization and management; share their musical knowledge through hands-on workshops and demonstrations at local elementary, middle and high schools; and enrich their own lives through the invaluable experience gained by reaching out to others. The Opera-Music Theater Outreach Program brings a young audience of area schoolchildren to UCLA's Schoenberg Hall for an opportunity to attend live performances on the UCLA campus. Prior to the visit, teachers receive educational packets to help familiarize their students with aspects of the upcoming performance. In the 2005-2006 academic year, the program served more than 3,300 students during five programs. "The Gluck Foundation's gift is highly significant," says Krouse. "These collaborative programs draw together UCLA faculty and student musicians, K-12 students and teachers, and community organizations throughout Los Angeles to develop substantive partnerships that create and cultivate a passion for music among the participants." |
