HAMMER MUSEUM The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden was the recipient of the first Public Open Space Award by the American Institute of Architects-Los Angeles. The Garden, which is overseen by the Hammer Museum, is recognized as a key work of landscape architecture that has evolved and matured over the past 35 years to become a celebrated open space in Los Angeles. Curatorial assistant Aimee Chang curated “New Balance Frontier” at the Soap Factory, Minneapolis. The exhibition presented artistic manifestations of personal and national identities and the urge for self-transformation through presentation. Hammer Projects curator James Elaine was a juror for the Miami Art Museum’s 2004 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists. He was also a juror for the Arthouse Texas Prize, which is awarded biannually to an emerging contemporary artist living in Texas. Director Ann Philbin was a jury panelist for the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award, which grants a young artist a cash prize and an exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut. The catalogue for “Christian Marclay” was recognized with an Honorable Mention in the American Association of Museums’ 2004 Museum Publications and Design competition. The exhibition debuted at the Hammer in May 2003 and travels internationally through May 2005. MUSIC The Ives Quartet has commissioned professor Roger Bourland to compose “String Quartet No. 1.” Bourland is also composing the music for the film, “Cages.” | | University organist and visiting assistant professor Christoph Bull toured the West Coast last spring with violinist Lili Hayden. The duo performed in Seattle, Washington; Portland and Eugene, Oregon; San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Mount Shasta, California. Orchestrations by lecturer Paul Chihara of Chopin’s Piano Concerto in E Minor were performed at Carnegie Hall, New York, by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with soloist Garrick Ohlsson. Chihara was recently appointed curator of lectures and outreach for the orchestra. Professor Juliana Gondek and pianist Victoria Kirsch performed in concert in October at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Leo S. Bing Theater. The performance was broadcast live on K-Mozart FM radio. Earlier this year, students of trumpet professor Jens Lindemann took home the top honors at the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, Virginia. In addition, Adam Bhatia, a junior, was the winner in the college division, solo division, and Max Hembd, a first year student, won the Accompanist’s Choice Award for his solo performance. The group, vying against music students from throughout the United Sates, was the first in the competition’s history to perform from memory. Lecturer Sheridon Stokes has been honored by the National Flute Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The award will be presented at their annual convention next August in San Diego. UCLA LIVE Design for Sharing, the outreach arm of UCLA Live, received a $10,000 grant from Citigroup Foundation. The funds will support demonstration performances for Los Angeles public school students. WORLD ARTS AND CULTURES The Arts in Contemporary Healing by professor Irma Dosamantes-Beaudry was published by Greenwood Publishing as part of its Contribution to Psychology Series. The book features a contemporary arts-based model of healing. Other faculty winners were lecturer Hassan Christopher for innovation and lecturer Maria Gillespie in the category of performance, small ensemble, for “The Quickening,” with Stephan Nicoli. |
