
- I Dewa Putu Berata
Considered one of Bali's leading independent artists, I Dewa Putu Berata
has directed a number of prominent gamelan orchestras in Bali and teaches
in his village of Pengosekan. He is a graduate of STSI, the Academy
of Music and Dance in Denpasar, Bali and has apprenticed with the leading
musicians of Peliatan, Bali. His recent work with American artists has
included Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Larry Reed and Keith Terry.
Irwansyah Harasap
Currently teaching Ethnomusicology in the
Program Etnomusikologi of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, Irwansyah
Harasap also directs activities for Gaung Sumatera Utara, "Echoes
of North Sumatra," a studio/workshop he established in 1995 to
bring together various performance traditions. A trained musician in
various genres, including guitar, bass guitar, gambus (Melayu
plucked lute), ud (Arab plucked lute) , taganing (Toba
Batak tuned-drum set), godang hasapi (Toba Batak string and xylophone
ensemble), and gordan sambilan (Mandailing Batak nine-drum set).
His studies on "Taganing of the Toba Batak" at the Program
Etnomusikologi, Fakultas Sastra from 1983 to 1991 led to his work at
the University of Washington, Seattle, where he earned his 1994 M.A.
degree in Ethnomusicology.
Eko Supriyanto
A graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (STSI) in Surakarta,
Central Java, Eko Supriyanto credits his training, beginning at the
age of ten, with Kahari and Alit Maryono as the foundation of his achievements
in Javanese classical dance. He has been involved with prominent Indonesian
dance groups that tour internationally and has brought his experiences
into his own works of choreography, musical composition, and theatrical
collaboration. Mr. Supriyanto is currently preparing two major pieces,
one of which will be presented for his senior thesis, at the same time
as he is completing a guest residency at the 1997 American Dance Festival.

Indra Utama
A leading dancer and choreographer of Sumatra,
Indra. Utama is the dance director of ASKI, the Academy of Music and
Dance in Padang Panjang, Western Sumatra. Known for his interest in
both traditional and contemporary expressions, his work draws upon Minangkabau
dance and Penca Silat martial arts as well as experimental sources.
He recently participated in an intercultural workshop in Singapore,
directed by Ong Sen Kang of Theatreworks.
